Environmental Packaging Summit

Earlier this month we attended Packaging News’ Environmental Packaging Summit – a timely event with the COP26 proceedings.

Tim Barbary, Benchmark’s Co-Founder and Company Director, was a key speaker in the carbon emissions talks, delivering a presentation to attendees on the need for granular measurement and reporting of carbon emissions in the packaging manufacturing process – the area where Benchmark’s expertise lie. Tim also emphasised the benefit of promoting carbon reduction efforts to customers through on-pack labelling, whilst highlighting the need to comply with the Green Claims Code.

We are delighted with the reception that the presentation received. It was great to see many businesses considering the impacts of carbon in their manufacturing and wanting to better their impacts on the environment. Even better, talking to people face-to-face, rather than through a computer screen!

One of the most salient key takeaways from the summit was that there is now much less debate about which are the lesser damaging materials, i.e. plastic vs. paper, and much more acknowledgement that the better material depends entirely on the what the product is. This is encouraging as plastic is often demonised when in actuality, it shouldn’t always be; single-use plastics are a problem, however developments such as recycled plastic and  bio-plastic are great innovations that should be celebrated!

The development of a circular economy was also a large focus at the summit. Creating a circular economy reduces both waste and carbon emissions, lessening the impact of the manufacturing of packaging on our environment. Many businesses are making strides in their efforts towards creating a more circular economy, which is great to see.

We are thankful to Packaging News for putting on the event, bringing together like-minded people and businesses. We hope that events such as these are helping to shape a more sustainable packaging industry and aid in the fight against climate change.
