Why having a third-party sustainability verification is beneficial.

Here at Benchmark, we believe we must all work together to embrace sustainability. We work passionately with packaging producers, brands, and retailers to empower stakeholders and employees, working to halt the climate crisis and in doing so, improving society for a better future.
We enable meaningful change that creates a more sustainable, equitable, and moral world, and we do this by supporting forward-thinking businesses in their sustainability goals and certifying their green achievements. When you recognise a Benchmark-certified member (identifiable by our on-pack carbon labels), understand that they are driving continuous positive change through their actions, people, and reach.
Accreditation
We measure your carbon footprint CO2e with rigour, so you can report your progress with confidence and authenticity, adhering to the Competition and Markets Authority’s’ Green Claims Code.
Understanding the impact that your business has on the planet is essential for identifying your progress in making reductions. Our software solutions provide a simple way for you to get a clear and whole picture of your environmental impacts; measurement allows for improvement after all!
Annual auditing by Benchmark provides a third-party sustainability certification and on-pack logo for every type of packaging organisation. Our certification recognises continuous improvement, encourages action, and builds an empowered community of like-minded individuals who make a world of difference.
Through our independent certification, we can help your business to strengthen your Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). ESG is increasingly permeating into the language of investors and the investment community are using ESG to make investment decisions connecting this to long term growth, competitive edge, and success!
ESG looks at:
- People (dignity, Equality, Future Skills, Health, Safety and Wellbeing),
- Planet (climate change, land use, ecology, Nature loss and Fresh water availability)
- Prosperity (Employment, Wealth Generation, Innovation of products and services and Community and social vitality.
Putting your certificate in the public domain demonstrates transparency in sustainability progress while building trust and loyalty with your customers and supply chain.
How does it work?
We enable packaging organisations and their people to positively transform society, the environment, and the economy through measurement of their carbon footprint CO2e data, using our four-step process: 1. Engage, 2. Measure, 3. Audit, 4. Certify and Communicate.
Engage
Change is inevitable often triggered by a problem. However multiple subsequent revisions to a change can be demotivating for the staff who can in turn become barriers to the subsequent successful role out. Communication is therefore key when it comes to implementing change. With business leadership as an active sponsor, Benchmark engages with cross functional management and the shop floor to Identify key data points. We plan, do, check and adjust.
See the example for flexible packaging:
Measure
We know what should be happening based on our experience in the packaging industries, which is our ‘Benchmark’. We gather your data, identify, and close the commercial and CO2e gaps by highlighting and testing systems or processes offering countermeasures and only implement when everyone is aligned.
As a result of our rigorous, granular measurement, supported with data from academics, the science community, and other external bodies, e.g., the International Energy Agency (IEA); this coupled with accurate calculations using IPCC methodology and applying a ‘LEAN’ business approach that maximizes value while minimizing waste at every process, we can demonstrate your commitment to improvement and a sustainable future.
Audit / Certify
Reducing your carbon footprint CO2e may well be a journey over many years with many contributing factors changing results from one year to the next, e.g., the energy mix by country will change for the better as nations adopt greener alternatives as they move away from fossil fuel. Businesses may invest in alternative energy solutions at a site level, may invest in new equipment that runs faster, has less waste, or even wins new business on existing assets that better optimise machinery dimensions. In each instance the overall site carbon footprint CO2e and the impact at the SKU should be assessed, audited and certified such that all stakeholders are satisfied.
We appreciate that Covid-19 has meant changes for your business. Nevertheless, we have found ways to adapt your audit and certification methodology to overcome these challenges.
Communicate
We supply the tools for you to communicate your progress, building a trusted business.
Our Benchmark is an easily recognisable symbol of sustainability progress and will bring independent credibility to your activities.; you too can be seen as a leader, encouraging others to act on the climate crisis.
Showcasing your certificate in branding demonstrates transparency regarding your sustainability progress, whilst building trust and loyalty with your customers and supply chain.
Our customers can communicate their progress with confidence, transparency, and enthusiasm.
