COP 26 Countdown: 26. What does the UK’s Industrial Decarbonisation Initiative say about product packaging?

The UK’s Industrial Decarbonisation Initiative sets out the governments road map to net zero. In particular, Chapter 3 discusses their intentions for on-pack carbon labelling of produce, enabling consumers to make informed, sustainable decisions when purchasing.

We will develop a proposal for a new labelling system for intermediary industrial products reflecting their impact on the environment, which could be implemented in the mid-2020s.

We will also consider expanding existing labelling for consumer products, such as vehicles and appliances, to include an assessment of embodied emissions from the mid-2020s onwards.

The ability to assess the embodied emissions of products will provide a new opportunity to give consumers greater detail on the climate impact of their purchases.

Any label on a final product will need to be easily understood and used by consumers, building on existing labelling approaches such as energy efficiency labels currently required for energy-related products such as fridges and dishwashers.

Benchmark acknowledges the need for understandable labels which is why we offer a traffic-light coded carbon labelling system for on-pack, allowing businesses to showcase green credentials and providing consumers with the ability to make informed packaging decisions.
